Site Redevelopment
The Academy has been exploring its key differentiators and opportunities to lead in its area of speciality. Fundamentally, Rundle Academy is exploring a new school on the current site with the objectives to:
-
Provide optimal environments for learning and teaching, specific to diagnosed learning disabilities and associated co-occurring diagnosis.
-
Support an increase in student enrolment and associated staff.
-
Provide additional spaces to further engage the community and create a truly inclusive space.
-
Enable the school to fulfill its ambition to become recognized for their excellence in teaching.
New School Concept
The new school was designed with the whole in mind but based on a phased approach. Aspects that influenced the placement and site layout of the new building include the existing buildings, setbacks, height restrictions, entrance and egress to the property and orientation. The school will need to fully operate during construction. Precedents that were used as inspiration for the new Rundle Academy School share the following characteristics including natural light entering the building, impressive volumes in the gathering spaces but still scaled appropriately for the student population, use of natural materials such as wood, clay, brick and stone, and a contemporary feel.
City of Calgary Development Process
A pre-application for a Development Permit (DP) has been submitted for review by the City of Calgary. Based on feedback, a new DP will be submitted mid-February 2023. There will be other opportunities for feedback through the City process.
